Phone scam leads to computer virus, unauthorized charges

Butler County Sheriff's Deputy Chris Reneer is advising residents to be aware of a new scam that has been recentlyreported.  A Butler County resident was having issues with her computer and within days an individual going by the name of Kevin, speaking with an accent, called her claiming to be a representative from Microsoft and said he could walk her through the steps to fix her computer issue for a fee of $2.95.  The number he called from was 503-908-4132.  Once the scammer had access to the individual’s computer he installed a virus which completely shut the computer down and currently it has not been able to be repaired.  Along with the computer being corrupted, the victim’s bank account has been compromised as well with several unauthorized charges.  If you are contacted in regards to this scam please notify the Butler County Sheriff’s Department at 270-526-3676.  In no circumstances should you ever give your personal information to anyone you do not know.
