Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Our Butler County schools are on spring break this week. This break is a ‘recess’ in early spring for universities and schools, allowing students and families the time to enjoy a change of pace. And, many choose to travel.

According to hotel bookings at travelweb.com, the top 2004 spring break destinations were:
1.    Miami Beach, Florida
2.    Orlando, Florida
3.    Las Vegas, Nevada
4.    New York, New York
5.    Tampa/St.Petersburg/Clearwater Beaches, Florida
6.    Cancun, Mexico
7.    San Diego, California
8.    Daytona Beach, Florida
9.    Honolulu, Hawaii
10.    Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona

Another source listed favorite 2012 spring break locations as:
1.    Cancun
2.    Panama City, Florida
3.    Miami and South Beach, Florida
4.    Europe
5.    Puerto Vallarta
6.    Acapulco
7.    Bahamas and Jamaica
8.    South Padre Island, Texas
9.    Baja (Rosarito Beach, Cabo) or Puerto Rica
10.    North American ski resorts

Considering the differences in the two lists, college students and families seem to be doing more travel outside the U.S. during spring break now.
Approximately 38% of college students (2.14 million) travel for spring break. In 2003, $1billion was spent by spring breakers between Florida and Texas (http://www.chacha.com/question/how-much-does-the-average-college-student...). The average college student spends $1,100 a week on spring break and less than half of that is spent on lodging and transportation (http://www.mainstreet.com/article/smart-spending/budgeting/spring-break-...).
This week, many are traveling. I hope they enjoy their trips and return home safely.
