Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Easter is an important day for the Christian world, and on Sunday, it arrives once again. At my house, Easter is a time of thanksgiving, church service, and family gathering.

Easter is a Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion at Calvary. According to Wikipedia, the date of Easter varies and Easter customs also vary across the Christian world. But, attending sunrise services and decorating Easter eggs, a symbol of the empty tomb, are common. Additional customs include egg hunting, the Easter Bunny, and Easter parades, which are observed by Christians and many non-Christians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easter#cite_note-7).

To some degree, time has changed the way Easter looks in our society. I don’t recall plastic eggs and Easter bunny treats as a child. I remember attending a community sunrise service as a teen (on my own, as a newly-licensed driver), coming back home to the smell of breakfast cooking, and being thankful for my blessings. When our daughters were young, I recall searching for spring outfits and filling colorful baskets with candy. And, as a granny, I like to assemble baskets of candy for each of my daughters’ families.

My late husband loved his grandchildren. One year, he decided to create an Easter tree. I had absolutely no confidence that this would work; but, thankfully he had a vision. As a surprise for our oldest grandson, my husband cut a large tree branch, put it in our yard, and hung colorful, plastic eggs from the branches. It turned out to be not only a nice surprise for a young boy, but also a pretty (if only for one day) Easter decoration.

Though Easter celebrations may vary from place to place, we celebrate the Messiah’s resurrection. “…He has risen!” (Mark 16:6 NIV). Happy Easter!
