Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Recently on the internet, I came across a quote in a question-and-answer format: “What is the hardest

truth you’ve learned? The world will not treat you better just because you are a good person (–

Unknown).” That sounds like a good response – an honest one.

Thinking along those lines, I wondered what other ‘truths’ people might have learned. So I asked friends

and family, “What is the hardest truth you’ve learned?” Their responses are listed below.

-The hardest truth I have learned is that addiction doesn’t discriminate.

-The two hardest truths I’ve learned are that life is not fair and bad things happen to really good people.

-Over time, life challenges provide context to the world and how things affect those around you.

-I’ve learned that beauty can be more beneficial than brain, and athletics is valued more than academics.

-More people than you think are not kind.

-That as soon as you step outside of your house, no one cares anymore. No one cares if you succeed, if

you’re comfortable, or if you don’t want to do something. You’re just another person and not a daughter,

or a sister, or an aunt. That was a cold splash of water to the face, but it helped me deal with the world

knowing nothing is personal.

-People’s integrity in general is low.

-Life doesn’t get any easier the older you get.

-I’ve learned that you never truly and honestly know someone.

-It’s possible for people you love and respect not to love you back and to actively seek out ways to hurt

you. And you may never know why.

-I think the thing that I have learned is that ‘things’ do not make you happy. When you’re younger, you

think if I had this, I’d be happy or when I get there, I’ll be happy. We look to the future and say someday

I’ll be happy. Well, reality is you’re not promised tomorrow. The reality is you need to enjoy every

moment you have and not worry about whether the house is clean. Instead, you need to worry about

whether you’ve heard from your kid today or whether you asked that person you love how his day was.

When the time comes, that’s all you will have – your friendships and your love for family. It’s really hard

to live in the moment; but as you get older, you realize that’s what you should do.

-God is in control. His plans trump our plans.

-The hardest truth I have learned is about people. People have all kinds of beliefs. Some beliefs are not

founded in facts, but still some would die before they would change their minds.

-No good deed goes unpunished.

-I have learned that blood family is not a guarantee of love and acceptance. True acceptance and love is

what makes a true family.

-The hardest truth I have learned is that trust is a rare reward in human relationships. Trust is often

sacrificed for self-preservation and is a complex component of honor and integrity. Trust is less valued

than one might think.

-I’ve learned that bad things can happen to anyone, Christian or not. Thankfully, God will get you through

it though.

-Growth is uncomfortable but necessary.

-Because we live in a fallen world, bad things are allowed to happen. It doesn’t mean the bad thing

happened for a good reason, or that everything happens for a reason; the reason is that this is an imperfect

world.

-I have learned that sometimes walking away isn’t quitting; it’s starting over for a positive change.

-The hardest truth I have learned is that the only person who can fulfill all of your needs is Jesus, and if

you think anyone else – a spouse, a friend, or a family member – can, you will be disappointed.

-I have learned that jobs can replace you; families cannot.

-The hardest truth I have learned is that you cannot heal in the same environment where you got sick.

-I’ve learned that nobody owes you anything.

Elvis Presley said, “Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain’t goin’ away,” and W.

Clement Stone said, “Truth will always be truth, regardless of lack of understanding, disbelief, or

ignorance.” Learned ‘truths’ help us to understand our world.
