Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

With spring’s arrival, many of us are thinking about yard work. I saw a quote that said, “Adult peer pressure: seeing your neighbor mow their lawn.” I like a neat yard. If my lawn looks overgrown, I want that chore done – ASAP. Unfortunately, other responsibilities, an illness, or a few days of rain may give grass time to grow higher than desired. Lawn ‘care’ is work.

Each spring I make a list: clean up fallen limbs, clean up fallen leaves from the fence line and from around the house, trim the bushes, mow the grass, enrich the dirt for flowering and vegetable plants, set plants/bushes, etc. Wondering if others have the same thoughts, I asked friends and family: “Do you have spring yard work or a yard project that you want to get done?” Their responses are listed below:

-Set plants, clean out the garage, and have a yard sale.

-Clean up sticks, leaves, etc., mow, and weed eat the yard.

-Everything! My poor body is already objecting. Every spring I am amazed at how soft I’ve gotten over winter. I just do my spring work a little at a time. I plan to plant a tree for Jennifer this spring, too.

-With the weather we’ve had recently, our yard of full of limbs. So, that’s a priority. But I was in Kroger and saw all the flower seeds. It made me want a flower bed! I cannot wait until it’s warm and sunny.

-My daughter and I are planning out our garden spots: one at my house and a large garden at her house. She has a tiller. My daughter saves her seeds so we don’t have to buy many seeds.

-Yes. We need to clean up limbs. We are also putting in a concrete pad for a basketball goal.

-Pull weeds and plant flowers.

-My biggest project is to complete my pool area! I want to add a stone look under the deck to cover the pool and add lots of flowers.

-Yes, I have so many things to be done. I definitely want to set out bushes and flowers and clean up the yard and the flower beds. Also, I want to hang spring wreaths, etc., outside and put away all the snowmen from winter.

-I’ll let my hubby answer this one for us!

-I want to build another raised garden bed and paint my outside porch columns.

- I just want to pick up and clean up – get ready to start mowing again. I also need to fix a drain hose at the end of one of my downspouts.

-I don’t do yard work. Hubby likes yard work!

-Landscaping and all it entails.

-I want to pick up sticks, but will wait for a while. A fire pit sounds like a good idea, but is probably out of my skill set!

-Yes! I want to clean out the flower beds.

-I need to power wash the deck and clean out the garage.

-I always help Dad with whatever he needs, and I try to keep fresh wildflowers in the kitchen.

-Oh, yes! With the new patio I have, I need to do a lot of yardwork. I have trees and limbs and leaves – it will keep me busy until it snows. So, yes, yardwork plus!

-No yardwork this year!

-I want to work in my flowers and get ready to mow.

As I’ve said before, yardwork is like housework – if you don’t do it, it multiplies exponentially. I like for my yard to look nice. And I am thankful for the health that – so far – allows me to do some of the work.
