Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Doug Larson said, “Spring is when you feel like whistling even with a shoe full of slush.” It’s a pretty time with nature showing off its flowers and trees. Spring also brings spring break, Easter, and spring chores to many of us.

This year, spring break for our local schools is April 4th-8th. I appreciate the spring, fall and Christmas breaks built into the school district calendar – for the students, the employees, and the families. Each break allows time to schedule appointments or trips for things the family needs or wants to do. As a grandparent, I like these breaks because I usually get more time with my grandchildren.

Easter will be observed on Sunday, April 17. My family has a few Easter traditions as many other families do. Some of those traditions include attending church, giving children (or families) Easter baskets filled with candy, hiding Easter eggs for children, some years having an Easter lily in the house, and visiting extended family sometime during the weekend. Easter is also the time to transition from all winter clothing to spring clothing – though weather does affect clothing choices. I look forward to Easter.

At the beginning of spring, I make a list of chores that I want to get done. This year is no different. In April and May before our Kentucky weather gets too hot, I like to spring clean my house, do the clean-up yard work needed after winter, and work on other projects that appear necessary. I have made a to-do list for those spring chores; however, I may not be able to get them all done within the two-month time frame. My list of extra projects is a bit longer this year, and I am a bit slower.

Henry Van Dyke said, “The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another. The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month.” That sounds about right for Kentucky. I plan to enjoy spring as it brings me spring break, Easter, and spring chores – a good trade for winter.
