Patty Craig; A Slice Of Time

This year spring will officially begin on Saturday, March 20. I’m already seeing signs of spring in nature. I have heard birds singing in the morning and have seen early spring flower buds in the yard. Also, after our last rain, some of the grass has turned green. One day last week, I actually rolled the car window down while I waited in the bank drive-thru, not waiting until the last moment. Signs of spring are becoming apparent.

Thinking about signs of spring, I wondered what other people noticed. So, I asked friends and family, “What are some of nature’s signs that you enjoy seeing that let us know spring is near?” Their responses are listed below:

-Frogs making noise.

-The tax return direct-deposit notification. I also like to see trees and flowers blooming, but my allergies flare up. And new-born animals are nice, too.

-Every year there are certain creeks that I drive by and I hear frogs singing. I watch different places that I know butter cups will be blooming. Spring has a fresh smell in the air. The main reason that I love spring is because I know the worst of winter is over. I hate winter.

-Sunshine and warmth. Things starting to bloom, like Easter flowers.

-I love watching frogs and turtles come up!

-When the trees, especially the red buds and dogwoods, start to bloom, I know spring is on the way visually; but to me, there is a certain smell that comes on the breeze. And that is my favorite sign that spring is coming. I can’t really describe the smell, but it is distinct.

-March flowers and the grass turning green.

-When the days start getting longer and I hear the birds sing in the morning, I know spring is on its way. The early blooms and daffodils are some of my favorites and the trees getting new buds and leaves. The world seems to come back to life or awaken after a long sleep. Hurry up, springtime!

-Easter flowers, buds on everything, the air starts having a fresh smell, and brown starts turning to green!

-Birds chirping and buttercup sprouts.

-Warming trends, lengthening light, and birdsongs returning!

-The different birds that are around now.

-Daffodils and tulips coming up.

-For me, it’s more about how the air smells than anything I can see. But the sight of all the new bunnies out scurrying around the yard is also a sure sign that spring is within reaching distance.

-Frogs croaking!

-Early flowers, sunshine, fresh mornings and bunnies.

-Warmer weather.

-The warmer weather makes my days so much better!

-Sweet smell early in the morning, of course buttercups, and how the earth is waking up to begin anew – the hope of beginning once more.

-Easter or daffodil flowers and other bulb flowers – like tulips – blooming, trees budding, birds singing, butterflies and bumblebees. I love so much about spring and new life.

-Plants and flowers sprouting/budding.

-Green grass!

Lewis Grizzard said, “Springtime is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn.” I like that, and I eagerly anticipate seeing nature’s waking signs. Come quickly, spring!
