Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Last week, I wore corduroy pants for the first time this fall – a sure sign of a cool day. Three events scheduled in the near future also mark this time as mid-fall. Halloween, the end of Daylight Savings Time, and Election Day will soon come and go. Each of these mid-fall dates has its own significance.

First, years ago, Halloween was just fun. Sometimes a little mischief would occur, but thankfully most in good fun. Trick-or-treating was fairly safe, maybe because parents took their children to homes known to the family and only a few homes at that. However, over time, Halloween has become more dangerous. Parents should likely accompany their children and then check treats before allowing children to eat them. Dressing up on Halloween can still be fun – and sometimes funny. Halloween decorations are also entertaining and colorful. I do like fall decorations! And hopefully, parents and children will have a spooky good time while staying warm and safe.

Second, Daylight Savings Time ends Sunday morning, November 3 – when we fall back. At 2:00 a.m., clocks should be turned backward 1 hour to 1:00 a.m. local standard time. Of course, most will simply turn back their clocks before going to bed (relying on their smart phones to reset themselves) or when they awake. As the days shorten, the return to standard time will provide more daylight in the morning and the afternoon hours of daylight will be shortened. Why do we do this? Well, it’s the law.

Third, Election Day is Tuesday, November 5. We’ll cast our ballots to elect public officials once again. Next week, Kentuckians will vote for their next Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, Auditor, Treasurer, and Commissioner of Agriculture. These are some powerful positions. I hope the voter turnout is high, and people make their opinions known. Unless I am sick, I vote. It only takes a few minutes.

Steve Jobs said, “It’s really clear that the most precious resource we all have is time” (https://www.brainyquote.com/topics/time-quotes), and Erma Bombeck said, “Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the ‘Titanic’ who waved off the dessert cart” (http://mer-cury.com/quotes/14-carpe-diem-quotes-to-help-you-seize-the-day/). These three events – Halloween, the end of Daylight Savings Time, and Election Day – will each have passed in one week. Let’s enjoy our mid-fall days!
