Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Reese Witherspoon said, “Lord knows, every day is not a success, every year is not a success. You have to celebrate the good” (https://www.brainyquote.com/topics/celebrate). Witherspoon is right; we should celebrate the good. Reading about upcoming holidays, I found five August holidays that could be entertaining: Sisters Day, Relaxation Day, Senior Citizens Day, Be An Angel Day, and Just Because Day.

·

Sisters Day (https://www.latestly.com/lifestyle/festivals-events/national-sisters-day...):

National Sisters Day is observed on the first Sunday of August in the United States, falling on August 4th this year. While, initially National Sisters Day was celebrated to acknowledge the relationship between biological sisters, over the years, the day has come to celebrate sister-like relations. People use the day to thank their sisters for being a part of their lives. Along the same line, Brothers Day is in May, and Brother and Sister Day is in March.

·

Relaxation Day (https://dayfinders.com/relaxation-day/):

The National Relaxation Day is an unofficial holiday celebrated on the 15th of August each year. This is the day when people can slow down. According to the founder of this day, too much work can make people sick. The founder of Relaxation Day was Sean Moeller, and he was only in the fourth grade when he suggested this day back in 1985. Currently, the day is recognized worldwide.

·

Senior Citizens Day (https://whenisholiday.com/america/when-is-senior-citizens-day-2017.html):

Ronald Reagan declared the holiday in 1988; prior to this, many had observed August 14 as Senior Citizens Day – the day Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act in 1935. This holiday is celebrated annually on the twenty-first of August. National Senior Citizens Day is a day to show appreciation and support as well as to recognize senior accomplishments. It’s also a time to raise awareness of the various issues that affect senior citizens.

·

Be An Angel Day (https://whenisholiday.com/america/when-is-be-an-angel-day-2017.html):

The initiator of Be An Angel Day was Jayne Howard Feldman, and the first occasion was in 1993. The celebration was set on the 22nd of August. Be An Angel Day is intended to promote charity to other people. Each year, many people all over the world plan charitable deeds for August 22nd.

·

Just Because Day (https://nationaltoday.com/national-just-because-day/):

August 27 is a day to do what you want – just because.  The Just Because Day has become a way to spread random acts of kindness. Some ways to celebrate might include sending a card to a friend, just because, or giving your family members a call, just because. This is a day to make things better than we found them, just because.

Maya Angelou said, “How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!” (https://www.brainyquote.com/topics/celebrate). Many of our newer celebrations or holidays focus on something good, like strengthening relationships or showing kindness. Through these celebrations, we can recognize our own “heroes and she-roes.”
