Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Many of us are so ready for the coming summer. This week school is closing for summer vacation, graduation is scheduled, and then we’ll have Memorial Day weekend to relax. The end of May can be exciting!

The last day of school for students in Butler County is Friday. This week is a busy time for teachers and students, trying to wrap up the 2019 school year. Both are likely eager for a break – a change of pace. The Butler County Schools 2019-2020 calendar shows the first day back for students as Wednesday, August 7th. This gives students about 10 ½ weeks of summer vacation. As a grandmother, I’m happy the students get this break. As a former teacher, I’m thankful teachers have some time to rest as well.

Graduation is a joyful milestone in life. It marks the end of one period and the beginning of another. By graduation, many are already anticipating the next stage in life. Since our graduates have worked to reach this goal, congratulations are deserved, and friends and family naturally want to celebrate with them. I wish each of our Butler County graduates success in that next step.

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial beginning of summer. Many people cook out and open their pools. It’s a great opportunity to spend time with friends and family. Since it’s a long weekend, some may choose to travel. But Memorial Day is more than a restful weekend. Doc Hastings explained, “137 years later, Memorial Day remains one of America’s most cherished patriotic observances. The spirit of this day has not changed – it remains a day to honor those who died defending our freedom and democracy” (https://www.brainyquote.com/topics/memorialday). Thus, Memorial Day is also a day of remembrance.

The end of May brings the closing of school, graduations, and Memorial Day weekend. I hope to spend time with my family and friends and simply enjoy. And, Butler County graduates, congratulations!
