Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Good Friday and Easter are almost here. These days are very important to the Christian faith. Also interesting are the many things we tend to associate with Easter.

Facts about Easter are entertaining (https://albertonrecord.co.za/172714/easter-trivia-facts-need-know/; https://www.uselessdaily.com/news/50-amazing-facts-about-easter-list/#.X...), including the following bits of information:

•In the Christian religion, Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

•The white lily is the official flower of Easter.

•In the US, only 12 of the 50 states recognize Good Friday as a holiday.

•Next to Halloween, Easter is the biggest candy-consuming holiday of the year.

•The custom of giving eggs at Easter has been traced back to Egyptians, Persians, Gauls, Greeks and Romans, for whom the egg was a symbol of life.

•The world’s biggest Easter egg was prepared by the Argentinians in 2015, using 8,000 kgs of chocolate.

•It’s estimated that Americans spend $131, on average, every Easter.

•Egg dyes were once made out of natural items such as onion peels, tree bark, flower petals, and juices.

•Americans buy more than 700 million Peeps during the holiday.

•76% of Americans think the ears of a chocolate bunny should be the first to be eaten.

•70% of Easter candy purchased is chocolate.

•The first Easter baskets looked like bird’s nests.

Additionally, Easter brings to mind clothing. When I was a child, my mom must have begun working on clothing days before Easter Sunday. After all, she had six children, and with the change of season, the previous summer’s clothing would not likely fit growing children. I don’t remember much about the dresses, but I remember wearing patent leather shoes with a strap that buckled. When I had children of my own, they had similar shoes until they were old enough to choose for themselves. When I shopped for my daughters’ Easter clothing, I usually bought my husband a new shirt – I didn’t want him to feel left out. Easter certainly doesn’t require new clothing, but the seasonal change may.

Also, Easter baskets filled with candy are a family tradition. We had three baskets – one for each daughter. Over time, the baskets evolved into being one for each family. Recently, I have cut back on the amount of candy in the baskets, substituting other things. My family and I like candy, but we don’t need so much at one time.

Bernhard Langer said, “To a Christian, Easter Sunday means everything, when we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ” (https://www.brainyquote.com/topics/easter). Easter is a day of remembrance and thanksgiving. And our Easter traditions become a part of that celebration.
