Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Our next American federal holiday, January 21, is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Around this time of the year, I tend to think of Dr. King’s I-have-a-dream speech. King said, “I have a dream today!” (https://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/mlkihaveadream.htm). I have way too many dreams – every day.

Wondering what dreams friends and family have, I asked them: “In Martin Luther King, Jr.’s I-have-a-dream speech, he said, ‘I have a dream today!’ What is one of your dreams?” Their responses were:

•To be debt free so we can travel.

•One of my dreams is to have a family and own a horse farm.

•My dream would be that – with all the struggles I have endured, all the disappointments that life offers, and all the things I did not accomplish – my children are good and make a difference in people’s lives and that long after my death, my memory lives in their hearts. After all, living in people’s hearts is how we live forever.

•Obtaining my bachelor’s degree.

•To have some babies.

•To be debt free, to be able to retire early, and to be financially independent.

•I’m not much of a dreamer. I would love a world where children are all made to feel loved and are taken care of. Seeing children suffer from neglect and abuse is so hard. I mainly dream of heaven. I’m so ready.

•My dream is for my business to continue to grow and prosper as it has this past year! I always dream that my girls will find good Christian men to be their husbands and that the boys will seek good Christian girls as they begin dating (later of course!).

•I dream that I’ll get my house back in shape soon. I also dream that I’ll have a healthy grandchild and a daughter come through okay, too, if it’s God’s will.

•My dream is financial freedom. Not rich. Just not in debt.

•That people will accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

•Obtaining my bachelor’s degree.

•Health and happiness for my friends and family is a dream, and grace and strength to handle the disappointments.

•One of my dreams is for my daughter to be healthy and happy and for her to be everything God intends for her to be.

•I have a dream of seeing every state in our great nation, and I am working hard to make it happen before I am too old to enjoy it.

I have a few dreams as well. I have a dream that my family and I will be healthy and safe. I have a dream that our city and county will become a vital part of an improved Kentucky economy. I have a dream that Kentucky will find a reasonable way to solve the retirement funding problem without hurting those who have paid into the systems. I have a dream that the United States will get out of debt to other countries. I have a dream that our world would be free from terrorism and violent crimes.

Colin Powell said, “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work” (https://www.brainyquote.com/topics/reality), and Walt Disney said, “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them” (https://www.brainyquote.com/topics/dreams). I love their positive attitudes. Nonetheless, I don’t have the power to make my dreams come true – they are in God’s hands.
