Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Valentine’s Day is a day about love. Oscar Wilde said, “You don't love someone for their looks, or their clothes or for their fancy car, but because they sing a song only you can hear” (http://www.theholidayspot.com/valentine/quotes_and_sayings.htm#Olpeqczz2...). And it’s not uncommon for couples to choose a favorite song – often a love song associated with happy times. Valentine’s Day is a great day for love songs.

Last July, Time Out (https://www.timeout.com/newyork/music/50-best-love-songs) posted what they believed to be the 50 best love songs ever recorded. Ten of the fifty titles chosen included:

·       “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys
·       “I Say a Little Prayer” by Aretha Franklin
·       “Something” by the Beatles
·       “One and Only” by Adele
·       “My Girl” by the Temptations
·       “At Last” by Etta James
·       “Be My Baby” by the Ronettes
·       “Burning Love” by Elvis Presley
·       “I Will Always Love You” by Dolly Parton
·       “When a Man Loves a Woman” by Percy Sledge

Author Sophie Harris and the Time Out editors included some background information about each of the fifty love songs chosen, creating an interesting and informative article.

Thinking about love songs, I asked family and friends: “As part of a couple, have you ever had a favorite song (our song)? If so, what was or is the song?” Most did not claim a favorite song, but those who did said:

·       “One Friend” by Dan Seals.

·       “Whenever You Come Around” by Vince Gill

·       We had a favorite rock band – a couple of girls with a couple of guys on back up guitars. They were great! But since we’ve been together 32 years and married 31 years, I’m not sure how many of them are even still living!

·       “Then” by Brad Paisley, “Your Man” by Josh Turner, and “Dirty Little Secret” by America Rejects.

·       Our song was the theme song of the movie Love Story (1970). We watched the movie together when we were dating and included the music in our wedding music. Sometime afterward, my late husband gave me a music box that played that song.

Someone said, “Love is happiness given back and forth.” Charles Schulz said, “All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt” (https://www.brainyquote.com/topics/valentinesday). So maybe any day is a good day for love songs – especially with chocolate and happiness.
