Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Last Tuesday evening (January 30) as many around the world listened, President Trump addressed Congress. His words touched on the economy, our infrastructure, and immigration. He stated his administration’s vision or mission: “to make America great again for all Americans,” and said, “So let usbegin tonight by recognizing that the state of our Union is strong because our people are strong.”

Wikipedia described the State of the Union Address as “an annual message presented by the President of the United States to a joint session of the United States Congress, except in the first year of a new president's term. The message includes a budget message and economic report of the nation, and also allows the President to outline their legislative agenda (for which they need the cooperation of Congress) and national priorities. The State of the Union Address fulfills rules in Article II, Section 3 of the U.S.

Constitution, requiring the President to periodically give Congress information on the ‘state of the union’ and recommend any measures that the President believes are necessary and expedient”

Juan Williams of Fox News recently wrote an article explaining his opinion that President Trump needed an outstanding State of the Union address. He concluded his thoughts by saying, “So, the odds are that Trump will make his address into a sales pitch for Americans who have doubts about the tax cut. It will be an uphill climb” (http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2018/01/23/juan-williams-trump-needs-state-

union-home-run-to-stem-2018-gop-losses.html).

President Trump’s address promised hope for the future. Two quotes showing that promise included:

“The era of economic surrender is over.”

“Together, we can reclaim our building heritage.”

As Trump began to conclude the address, he stated, “But above all else, they are Americans. And this Capitol, this city, and this nation, belong entirely to them. Our task is to respect them, to listen to them, to serve them, to protect them, and to always be worthy of them....The people built this country. And it's the people who are making America great again” (http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/transcript-president-

trumps-2018-state-union-address/story?id=52727276).

The American people are strong and resilient. And although President Trump’s mission to make America great again for all Americans is a fairly broad concept, it’s a worthwhile goal. After all, the wellbeing of our country is critical.
