Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

October is one of the most beautiful months of the year. The landscape becomes colorful, and the temperature cools. Color and activities abound!

Interestingly, some of the celebration days in October include the following (some more important than others):

  • ·       International Coffee Day on the 1st

  • ·       Columbus Day on the 9th

  • ·       World Mental Health Day on the 10th

  • ·       National Boss’s Day on the 16th

  • ·       World Food Day on the 16th

  • ·       United Nations Day on the 24th

  • ·       National Chocolate Day on the 28th

  • ·       Halloween on the 31st

I’m having a hard time choosing a favorite: International Coffee Day or National Chocolate Day.

Many have expressed their thoughts about autumn. Some of those include the following (http://www.countryliving.com/life/g1897/fall-quotes/?):

·       I loved autumn, the one season of the year that God seemed to have put there just for the beauty of it. – Lee Maynard

·       Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all. – Stanley Horowitz

·       Two sounds of autumn are unmistakable… the hurrying rustle of crisp leaves blown along the street… by a gusty wind, and the gabble of a flock of migrating geese. – Hal Borland

·       The heat of autumn is different from the heat of summer. One ripens apples, the other turns them to cider. – Jane Hirshfield

·       Autumn… the year’s last, loveliest smile. – William Cullent Bryant

October seems to be a favorite time for many.

This is the month that certain things happen around my house. For instance, fall decorations recently appeared inside, and a mum was added outside. I also found a fragrant candle that makes my house smell delicious! And hopefully, sliced apples and caramel dip will be in my near future. Additionally, the downtown streets are decorated with pretty fall displays (I’m hoping someone waters the mums.).

Faith Baldwin said, “Autumn burned brightly, a running flame through the mountains, a torch flung to the trees” (American Family, http://www.quotegarden.com/autumn.html). I’m looking forward to the changing leaf colors and the pretty fall decorations. Welcome, October!
