Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

As I’ve said in years past, when the new fall television programming begins, I watch as many of the new programs as possible in order to select the ones I will continue to follow. During this timeframe, the DVR function gets a workout! And this week that process has begun.

Most networks change their schedules and programming in the fall. The “big three” networks’ fall primetime schedule includes a mixture of old and new programs.

·       ABC:  Three new fall programs are The Good Doctor (It began on Monday, 9/25.), Marvel’s Inhumans (9/29), and The Mayor (10/3). Some of this network’s returning programs include: American Housewife, Designated Survivor, Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, black-ish, Modern Family, Kevin (Probably) Saves the World (formerly The Gospel of Kevin), Scandal, and Once Upon a Time (http://6abc.com/entertainment/abc-2017-fall-primetime-premieres-and-sche...).

·       CBS:  New programming includes Young Sheldon, Me, Myself & I (Both began Monday, 9/25.), SEAL Team (9/27), Wisdom of the Crowd (10/1), and 9JKL (10/2). Some of the returning programs include: Scorpion, Bull, NCIS, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: LA, Criminal Minds, MacGyver, Hawaii Five-O, Blue Bloods, and Madam Secretary (http://www.cbs.com/shows/cbs-fall-preview-2017/schedule/). Many of these returning programs have been on my favorites list for years.

·       NBC:  This network’s new programs are The Brave and Will and Grace (a return from a few years back). Returning programs include This Is Us, The Good Place, Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., Blindspot, Law & Order: SVU, and The Blacklist (http://www.tvguide.com/news/nbc-fall-2017-premiere-dates-this-is-us-will...).

Another source of programming is video streaming services. Some of those include Netflix (perhaps the most popular in our area), Amazon Prime, Hulu, YouTube, and CBS All Access. For instance, the first season of the CBS All Access original The Good Fight (premiered in the fall of 2016 as a spinoff of The Good Wife) was only available by subscribing to their service. However, I recently watched this program on the Internet, binging the season 1 episodes. Since each streaming service has a monthly fee, subscribing to multiple services is hard to justify.

Alfred Hitchcock said, “Television is like the invention of indoor plumbing. It didn't change people's habits. It just kept them inside the house” (https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/television.html). Whether I’m inside or outside in the next few weeks, the DVR function will be used regularly to help make program decisions for the season. I hope we all can find a few decent programs for entertainment.
