Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Since September began, I’ve been thinking about the two items on my summer project list that I didn’t get around to completing. I would like to have those things done (paint a door and sort through the contents of some shelves in the garage), but I don’t know whether I will get to them in the immediate future. Time and desire are definitely factors.

Wondering whether others have unfinished summer plans, I asked friends and family: “If you had summer plans that did not happen (examples: painting, cleaning, yard work, reading, relaxing in the sun), what was it that did not get done?” Their responses were:

·                *  I had planned to clean out my closet, but chose instead to read and spend time with my son before he left for school.

·                 *Summer ending, hooray! I am not much of a planner – lessens disappointment. However, I did get my master bathroom painted which led         me to the conclusion that I can live with the color on the bedroom walls.

·                *  Painting!

·                 *

Would have liked to swim more.

·                    I had hoped to paint the front door and repair a fence by now, but maybe cool fall temperatures are better for those activities anyway.

·                    Cleaning out the basement and organizing my closet.

·                    *  Tahiti!

·                  *   Paint the concrete on the back patio, clean out the flower bed, and grow more herbs.

·                  *  Cleaning out closets and yard work still need to be done; but, more importantly, summer will end before lots of reading and pontoon                     riding can be accomplished. So sad!

·                   *   Staining the deck – which I think I told you I would get done this summer.

·                  *     More pool time.

·                   *  It’s not over yet, but a lot didn’t get done at my house! I guess it will wait longer – maybe too much relaxing….

·                    *     Several years ago, I made a list of everything I needed to do around my house, and it had maybe 15 or 20 things listed. I got maybe two                or three things done and carried the others over to the next year. So, I’ve quit making lists and now just do the best I can. This way, I                    have no regrets.

·                    *    I would like to have redone the flower beds up against my house this summer…maybe next spring!

·                     *    I did get some painting done but have more I would like to do. It seems one thing calls for another. I’m getting some new storm doors                   next week in preparation for winter. The list goes on and on. It makes me tired!

Stephen Covey said, “The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities” (https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/s/stephencov133504.html). So, if I want my summer projects completed, I should schedule time for them. But then again, maybe they aren’t so important after all.
