Patty Craig: A Slice of Time
Celebrations represent good times in life – we remember those special times. The month of May seems to be filled with celebration. Our society has created several celebrations for the month: May Day, Derby Day, Mother’s Day, graduation ceremonies, and Memorial Day as well as several other days of recognition. Three of these celebrations will be special for me.
First, Mother’s Day is an important celebration. Someone said that a mother’s love is instinctual, unconditional, and forever. This is a good description of my mom’s love. As many of you would agree, I am blessed to have four generations in my family: my mother as well as my children and grandchildren. Mother’s Day will certainly be a day of celebration.
Second, graduations allow us to celebrate our graduates’ accomplishments – the reaching of a milestone. Last week one of my granddaughters graduated from UK with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She has worked hard, and reaching this milestone was a happy event. Similarly on May 26th, Butler County High School will recognize their graduating seniors. Congratulations to all 2017 graduates; I wish each of them great success.
Finally, Memorial Day is Monday, May 29th. It’s a time to remember U.S. men and women who died while in the military. Their sacrifices should definitely be recognized. This holiday is also an opportunity to remember lost family members. Beforehand, I plan to visit a couple of cemeteries in Muhlenberg County, going to my grandparents’ and my dad’s grave sites. I haven’t been in a while. And of course, I will place memorial flowers on my late husband’s grave. Although flowers are not necessary, they provide us a means to show our love and that we remember.
Celebrations mark or honor something important. Oprah Winfrey said, “The more you praise and celebrate life, the more there is in life to celebrate,” (https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/celebrate.html). As we observe these different occasions, let’s acknowledge and celebrate the associated blessings.
