Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Welcome to 2017! Several media sources have predicted a year of change – likely referring to a change in U.S. leadership. I certainly cannot predict what changes will occur or whether those changes will be positive or negative. I can tell you what I’d like to see changed.

Some changes I would put on a wish list for the coming year include the following:
•    All governmental levels: I wish our governments could function without incurring huge long-term debt (I recognize that some debt is necessary.).
•    National level: I wish the use of federal funds were more transparent.
•    National and state levels: I wish the national and state park systems were better funded, providing for adequate maintenance and updates.
•    State level: I wish Kentucky would provide more assistance to small businesses and/or cities focused on attracting tourism to our state.
•    County and city levels: I wish our county and city could become a bedroom community for young families who work locally or in surrounding counties (as opposed to being a city with an aging population).
•    Communication/media: I wish that the political news coverage would calm down because politicians would be taking care of business – as they were elected to do.
•    Environmental: I wish those living in or passing through our state, county and city would not litter. Trash detracts from nature’s beauty.
•    Business/industry: I wish our local businesses and industries would have a successful year and grow, requiring even more employees.
•    Education: I wish for a proficient or distinguished rating for each school within our local school district.
•    Personal: I wish to be (1) more healthy and fit as well as (2) more considerate of and patient with others.

No doubt, we will see changes during 2017. Jim Rohn said, “If you don't like how things are, change it! You're not a tree,” and Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has” (https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/topics/topic_change2.html). And most of us would agree that if 2017 brings positive changes, they will be welcomed.
