Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

The fall television broadcast schedule has begun. The networks – of course – are eager for each of us to watch their programming. This is the time of year when I wonder why I didn’t binge watch the one or two programs that I missed last year so that I’d be caught up to begin watching this season. It looks like my DVR will get a workout for a few weeks as I identify my prefer-to-watch programs for the season.

Watching television is a common pastime in our country. We may even turn on the TV to see the evening news and – whether we are watching or not – leave the TV on until bedtime. Many have commented on television, and a few of those comments include the following (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/television.html):
•    Chilling out on the bed in your hotel room watching television, while wearing your own pajamas, is sometimes the best part of a vacation. --Laura Marano
•    If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace. --John Lennon
•    Limit or eliminate late-night computer and television viewing. A computer or TV screen may seem much dimmer than a light bulb, but these screens often fill your field of vision, mimicking the effects of a room filled with light. --Andrew Weil
•    And I believe that good journalism, good television, can make our world a better place. --Christiane Amanpour

Although most of us have a number of channels from which to choose, the “big three television networks” in the United States remain ABC, CBS and NBC. The fall prime-time schedule includes an assortment of programs.
•    ABC
Some of the returning programs are Grey’s Anatomy, black-ish, How to Get Away with Murder, Quantico and Once Upon a Time. New programs include American Housewife, Conviction, Designated Survivor, Notorious, and Speechless.
•    CBS
Some of the returning programs are the Scorpion, the three NCIS programs, Criminal Minds, Code Black, Hawaii Five-O, Blue Bloods, Madam Secretary, and Elementary. New programs include Bull, The Great Indoors, Kevin Can Wait, MacGyver, Man with a Plan and Pure Genius.
•    NBC
Some of the returning programs are the three Chicago programs, Blindspot, Law & Order: SVU, The Blacklist, and Grimm. New programs include The Good Place, This Is Us, and Timeless.
Also, some network websites promise additional new programming to begin midseason.

I must confess that I am happy that the three NCIS programs, Blue Bloods, Madam Secretary, and The Blacklist were renewed. However, NCIS and The Blacklist were my favorites last year. NCIS writers have a good formula for the episodes, and the characters have worked well. This season, the NCIS team’s new members will bring an element of the unknown to the storytelling. In The Blacklist’s past, we have seen some bizarre, but gripping stories. And the unique characters are played by excellent actors. I never know what to expect in a storyline. I hope these programs continue to entertain.

Soon our television watching will be predictable again; we’ll know when certain programs are aired. And as Newton Minow said, “When television is good, nothing is better. When it’s bad, nothing is worse” (http://www.searchquotes.com/quotes/author/Newton_N_Minow). When it’s bad, we might have to find another entertainment.
