Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

James P. Hoffa said, “Labor Day is seen as a day of rest for many hardworking Americans” (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/labor_day.html). Even though I believe Hoffa is right, Labor Day weekend is a good time for a variety of activities. As the unofficial end of summer, many activities seem to beg for our time.

Wondering what others have planned, I asked and their replies are listed below. Only about 30% mentioned work.
•    Well, probably nothing since you can’t really top the 4th of July gathering at your house!
•    Homework and rest, hopefully. Also, need to have a yard sale, but don’t know if that’ll happen yet.
•    Sleep late, clean my house, hang out with my daughter, and go eat at the dove shoot after the shooting part is over.
•    Rest. Maybe take kids to the beach.
•    Swim and spend time with family and friends.
•    Be lazy and enjoy my freedom.
•    Work!
•    Spend time with family.
•    Cook out and dove hunt with family and friends. Relax and be thankful.
•    Working.
•    It’s my youngest baby’s birthday so we are celebrating with a party! Hope to get one more good use out of the pool this summer.
•    I don’t like traditional bachelorette festivities, so we are getting massages and facials and eating at The Melting Pot for my “bachelorette” weekend.
•    I will spend time with family. I always think of my Dad and how hard he worked and how much he enjoyed being with family.
•    Labor Day will be swimming, eating and birthday celebration. Saying farewell to summertime.
•    I am going to my sister’s bachelorette party that weekend (facials, massages, and pampering), then I’ll be working on Labor Day.
•    Simple – a day when the only thing anyone should be concerned about is having time to be with family – what really matters, not shopping but hang time. It’s a day off from the problems of the world and life.
•    I’m working at the hospital on Sunday, the 4th, and working at home the other days. Real exciting!
•    I have to work, but I’m off on Monday.
•    Looking forward to some down time and being with friends and family.
•    I hope to dove hunt – if there are any doves to be found.

My daughter and I planned to shop next weekend part of one day. According to Wikipedia, “many stores take advantage of large numbers of potential customers with time to shop, Labor Day has become an important weekend for discounts and allowances by many retailers in the United States, especially for back-to-school sales. Some retailers claim it is one of the largest sale dates of the year, second only to the Christmas season's Black Friday” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_Day). If correct, we should have lots of company while shopping.

One of the Maxine cartoons said, “I love Labor Day! What other day do you get to celebrate work without actually doing any?” Most of us will engage in some kind of work next weekend; but hopefully, we can relax some, too. Wishing you a pleasant Labor Day weekend!
