Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

As I’ve said before, family vacations are memory makers. Last week, 24 of us (representing four generations, ages 4 to 83) spent some time in the Smoky Mountains area. And, our vacation was memorable.

It’s a blessing to be able to spend time together. With busy work schedules and multiple responsibilities, my family’s time together is not as much as I would like. So, I was blessed last week. Some of those blessings included:
•    Traveling safety.
•    Seeing the younger children’s excitement.
•    Observing the patience that family members showed one another.
•    Listening to family banter.
•    Way too much food….
I also learned some lessons from my vacation:
•    Be flexible. One can’t totally plan the day.
•    Family members don’t necessarily think alike.
•    Money goes very quickly.
•    Get some rest; others don’t deserve an irritable attitude.
•    Group texting can become confusing and annoying.
Some incidents that may be remembered and retold at family gatherings include:
•    Following the 8-mile loop at Gatlinburg and seeing working artists and craftsmen who represent the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community.
•    Riding the sky lift and a very tall Farris wheel.
•    Visiting the aquarium, the Titanic Museum, and other attractions.
•    How often and how much 24 people eat.
•    Watching my thirteen-year-old grandson race up the stairs to beat the elevator – every time he tried.

Desmond Tutu said, “You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them.” And, Boyd K. Packer described family time as sacred. My family may be proof of this – they’re already planning the next family vacation.
