Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

The pear trees and the buttercups are blooming, signaling the new season. While enjoying spring’s beauty, I have a long to-do list. I like to get some things done before the hot weather arrives.

I like to clean my house well in the spring – deep spring cleaning. This task has to be completed in chunks. I space the cleaning out over a few weeks, doing a room or two at a time. It may take me longer to get the work completed, but I am usually still able to move around when I finish (To relate to that, you might have to be an older person.). Last year while cleaning windows, I hurt my ankle and wore a brace for about two months. This year, I plan to be more cautious.

My garage is also in need of reorganization. I’ve left things setting around that should be re-shelved. I have tubs of Christmas decorations setting on the garage floor; they should be neatly stacked in the garage loft (In my defense, the garage has been cold.). I have some cardboard boxes that were collected in case my daughter needed them when moving; but, the unneeded are still in the garage. And, as my late husband used to say, I have many “good and useful items” – things that should probably be thrown away. But, I’ll settle for things having a proper ‘place.’

The yard will soon need attention. I think I have a few days before getting really serious about it. Sticks have fallen from trees; leaves and litter have collected along the fence line. And, mowing is just around the corner…. I’m also eager to see whether my young bushes and trees survived our long winter. One little tree has leaf buds, and I’m watching the others. The ones that didn’t make it will be replaced – another task.

For me, spring is a time of beauty and of catching up after the winter. Margaret Atwood said, “In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt” (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/spring.html). And, as I work, that may very well be the case.
