October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Family Court Judge Mike McKown, Morgantown Mayor Billy Phelps, and Butler County Judge Executive David Fields declared October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Butler County on Wednesday, October 10th at the Butler County Courthouse.
The purpose of the event is to bring awareness to a problem that is affecting many families in Kentucky; and that is: “Domestic Violence.
”“October as a Domestic Violence awareness month brings to light the need to talk about this problem that even though happens behind closed doors, impacts many in our community,” said Karla Watts, of the Barren River Area Safe Space, Inc.
Judge McKown read the following proclamation:
  • 1 in 3 of the women and 1 in 4 men in the United States have experienced physical violence during their lifetime, and 1 in 7 women have experienced stalking; and,
  • Over 406 women and children have fled from domestic violence and secured emergency shelter at the Barren River Area Safe Space, Inc. during the last 12 months; and,
  • The life of every Kentucky women is valuable and precious and should never be harmed or damaged by the violence of another; and Kentucky’s children should never be forced to see a parent degraded, oppressed, or assaulted at the hands of another family member; and
  • The City of Morgantown and Butler County take this opportunity to honor the valued partnership with the Barren River Area Safe Space, Inc. which for over 38 years has resulted in comprehensive services for battered women and their children; and
We, believe in the inherent right of all women and children to remain free from violence and am committed to ending the cycle of violence in our city and county;
I, Mike McKown, Family Court Judge of Butler County, Kentucky do hereby proclaim the month of October 2018 as:
“National Domestic Violence Awareness Month”
And encourage all citizens to participate actively in events and programs to eliminate violence in our families.
