NWS issues excessive heat warning for central KY - including Butler

(Source: National Weather Service)

With triple-digit temperatures in the forecast this week, the National Weather Service office in Louisville, on Monday, issued an "Excessive Heat Warning" for "portions of southern Indiana and central Kentucky.  The area includes Butler County and surrounding areas.  The warning is in effect until 10 p.m. central time on Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), those in the impacted areas can expect "dangerously hot conditions with heat index values near 105 expected each of the next several days ... muggy nights with lows in the 70s will not provide much relief from daytime heat."

The NWS also advised about how the excessive heat may impact individuals.

According to the statement, "prolonged high heat and humidity will significantly  increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities."

Below are additional precautionary/preparedness actions the NWS suggests for the coming days:

--Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out

of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

--Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles

under any circumstances.

--Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When

possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or

evening.

--Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat

stroke.

--Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when

possible.

--To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational

Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent

rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Heat stroke is an emergency.  Call 9 1 1.
