New year brings swearing in of city, county elected officials
On Tuesday, December 30, Chief Circuit Judge Ronnie C. Dortch presided over the swearing in ceremony of the elected officials of Butler County.
“I have been on the bench since 1986 and then I was swearing in Jim Bat, Walter Chyle, and J.V. McKinney,” said Judge Dortch.
Judge Dortch administrated the oath of office required of Section 228 of the Constitution of Kentucky to all the elected officials present. He also administrated the required special oath for the sheriff and deputies.
In addition to the oath prescribed in the Kentucky Constitution, every sheriff takes the following oath: "I, do swear that I will do right, as well to the poor as to the rich, in all things belonging to my office as sheriff; that I will do no wrong to any one for any gift, reward or promise, nor for favor or hatred, and in all things I will faithfully and impartially execute the duties of my office according to the best of my skill and judgment, so help me God."

In his first act as Mayor of Morgantown, Billy J. Phelps administrated the oath of office to council member Dionne Meritt later Tuesday afternoon.
