New Intern Sam Osborne Joins Beech Tree News

Sam Osborne will be interning with the Beech Tree News this summer for 10 weeks starting this week as part of the Kentucky Press Association’s summer internship program. Osborne’s love for writing and journalism was sparked in high school. He was able to channel his interest in writing about sports and other topics through Bowling Green High School’s award-winning high school publication, The Purple Gem.  He won two national awards and several state-wide contests for his writing while serving as sports editor for the student newspaper. He said he owes much of his success and foundational background in journalism to his high school adviser, Denita Hines.

One of Osborne’s favorite articles he was able to cover for the Gem was a profile about current U of L basketball star Chane Behanan. That story can be viewed on this link: http://bghsdb.net/depts/journal/09Archives/Issue%201/Issue%201%20All.pdf

Osborne opted to attend Western Kentucky University and major in News/Editorial Journalism after graduating from Bowling Green High School in 2010.  He has written for both of WKU’s nationally acclaimed publications: the student newspaper, the College Heights Herald and the yearbook, the Talisman.

Osborne served as sports editor of the Talisman for the 2012-2013  school year.  He said one of the most memorable moments of the year was being able to travel to Detroit, Michigan and cover the WKU football team in their first-ever bowl game, the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl.  He was able to cover the Sun Belt Conference Basketball Tournament in Hot Springs, Ark. as well this past March. Being a lifelong resident of Bowling Green and fan of Hilltopper athletics,  Osborne said it has been a unique experience to combine his love for sports writing and WKU.

Osborne will be the Features Editor for the College Heights Herald beginning in Fall 2013. He’s excited for the opportunity to produce more content and be challenged, as the publication goes to print twice a week and has a very strong online presence, via the website wkuherald.com.

In addition to writing for WKU’s publications, Osborne also has a music blog dedicated to the many  up-and-coming artists and bands in Bowling Green.  That can be viewed here: http://samuelosborne22.wordpress.com/

Osborne looks forward to getting acquainted with the Morgantown community during his ten weeks with the Beech Tree News. He’s already had the opportunity to cover a few stories this week and meet some of the Morgantown community.  Osborne said he is looking forward to what the summer has in store.
