Parents, August 8th is almost here, and it’s hard to believe that the beginning of school is just around the corner.  I am sure that both students and parents are becoming excited and anxious about the opening of school as they begin shopping for those classroom supplies, new clothes, backpacks, and lunchboxes. I know I am just as excited to be starting my 15th year as the principal of Morgantown Elementary as I was starting my first year.
 
During the past few weeks, our faculty and staff have been putting together plans for the upcoming school year. One of the things they have decided is the theme for the upcoming year.  The theme for the 2013-2014 school year will be “Hollywood...on our way to becoming PROFICIENCY STARS”.  With the advent of Senate Bill 1 we have seen a greater focus on student growth and all students meeting that milestone of proficency.
Our focus here at Morgantown Elementary has always been, and will continue to be, the student and seeing that each student can and will meet his/her potential.  To help students meet that potential, we are excited to have a new reading series that is aligned with Kentucky's new Common Core Standards.
 
We will be having Open Houses for each grade level this year prior to the opening of school. Each Open House will be at 5:30 p.m.  We will meet in the gym where I will address the students and their families, after which students and parents will be released to their respective homerooms to meet their teachers.  Those attending the Open House will need to enter through the rear entrance.  Kindergarten Open House will be August 1st, first and second grades will be August 5, and third, fourth, and fifth grades will be August 6.
 
We would also like to take this opportunity to express best wishes to one of our staff members who has retired: Mr. Jesse Hardison, custodian at Morgantown Elementary.  We are sure Mr. Jesse will enjoy his new-found time with family and friends.  We would like to welcome the new additions to the MES faculty and staff:  Mrs. Kaylyn McKinney will be our new intermediate teacher and Mr. Chris House will come home to MES after a year at Butler County High School. In addition, we are happy to have Mrs. Judy Blanton and Mr. Steven Shepherd as new custodians to MES.
 
One of our highest priorities here at Morgantown Elementary has been, and continues to be, student safety.  We would like to remind parents that they must always sign in with the front office when visiting Morgantown Elementary. Also, students must be dropped off in the morning at the back gym doors, not in the front of the school due to heavy bus and car traffic.
