Morgantown City Pool receives upgrades

The Morgantown City Pool received a facelift this spring when the pool house and concessions areas received upgrades. During April and May of this year the pool house received new tile, showers, restrooms, sinks, mirrors, paint, lighting, counter tops, and new plumbing. The concessions area received a new flooring, microwaves, counter tops, and a new sink. The renovations were performed by City Maintenance, the inmate work program, and plumbing work by Lee Smith.

The new sinks and mirrors

Pool manager Andy Fuller said this is the first upgrades the pool has received since he began working there in 2003.

The new tile and paint

Fuller said the new tile flooring is already a huge improvement over what the pool house used to have.

"We used to have outdoor carpet in the pool house and it could get pretty nasty during the summer," said Fuller.

The new shower heads

He added, "They re-did a lot of plumbing work in the boys and girls bathrooms because when they went to replace the sinks and showers, the plumbing was basically from 1978."

The new stalls in the women's restroom

Morgantown Mayor Linda Keown said that it is hard to put an cost on the project because the inmate work program provided a lot of labor throughout the renovations.

"This project would have cost us a fortune if it wasn't for the inmates. They laid all of the floor tile and painted all of the walls," said Keown. "We replaced just about everything in the pool house, worked on the roof, and replaced the rope dividers in the pool for just over $33,000."

She added that there are a few more things that they would like to do at the pool and the city park in general.

"We're going to take a look at everything that needs to be done and work on getting it done," said the Mayor.

To see the new look for yourself, visit the City Pool Monday - Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, Sundays from 1 pm to 5 pm, or from 6 pm to 10 pm on Wednesdays.
