Morgantown City Council meets; Gaskey announces retirement

Morgantown City Councilman Jason Gaskey announced his retirement at the Council's March meeting. Gaskey has worked for the state for 26 years and has to retire from the city since they contribute to the same retirement fund.

Mayor Billy Phelps presented Gaskey with a road sign made for him and signed by the Council and various board members. He read an award citing Gaskey's service from January 1, 2017, to March 31, 2022, thanking him for his help in making the city a better place to work and live.

"I would like to thank the citizens of the City of Morgantown for giving me the opportunity to serve, " said Gaskey." It has been an honor. To the city employees and board members, I want to thank you for your hard work. Mayor Phelps and the council members I have served with for the last five years, we've accomplished many good things for the people, and it's been a pleasure to work with each of you."

The Council intends to ask a former council member who does not intend to run for election to finish Gaskey's term.

Department heads for city government each gave their monthly reports:

Housing: All units are occupied, and there is a waiting list

Utilities: Audit complete and clean, work in a grant to replace water valves across the City. They raised the natural gas transportation price by 30 percent for Real Alloy.

Planning and Zoning: Zoning permits are up, and the group is looking at some zoning changes in the future.

Fire Department: Reported one-vehicle accident in the city and 12 runs in the County.

Code Enforcement: Reported 12 active cases, closed three cases last month

MPD: Reported 331 calls for service from dispatch. All cadets are doing good at the academy, all are in the top 10, and one is a squad leader.

City Clerk: Grants are all in the same place as last month. The Morgantown Magazine will be coming out soon.

Mayor: City pool needs repairs, and the bids came back as $66K for sandblasting painting and striping. Any youth that wants a job for the summer will get a job, according to the mayor.

The Barren River Regional Multijurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan and the County Strategic Plan Adoption Resolution2022-02 were both approved approved in new business.

Per Mayor Phelps's recommendations, the Council appointed Michael Gary Jr. to the Utilities Board and Kylah Dockery to the Code Enforcement Board.

The Council went into a closed session under KRS 61.810(b) to discuss the sale or acquisition of real property.
