Morgantown City Council Meets in Called Session

Morgantown City Council met via Zoom on July 9 at 6:00 p.m. in a called meeting. Those council members present were Jason Gaskey, Russell Givens, Sharon Johnson, and Dionne Merritt. Sterling White and Dustin Embry were unable to attend. Also present via Zoom were Mayor Billy Phelps, City Administrator Jarrod Barks, Code Enforcement Officer Bob McKee, Maintenance Director Brad Johnson, and Chief of Police Giles Taylor.

McKee reported that work is beginning to normalize since the Covid-19 pandemic and that repeat offenders and old cases have been a recent priority.

Brad Johnson updated the council on the status of fencing for Riverview and Hill Haven Memory Garden Cemeteries. Johnson is collecting prices for materials and indicates that labor will not be a factor as the fencing will be installed by city workers. Mayor Phelps explained to the council that the current fencing is hard to maintain and showing much wear.

Barks updated the council on several grants that have been applied for by the city. He indicated that closures in state government due to the Covid-19 Pandemic have left the process of attaining some of these grants at a stand-still. Grants mentioned were a $5,000 grant to the Morgantown Fire Department for equipment, a grant for a generator to keep City Hall up and running in the event of power-failure and a FEMA grant for $180,000 in light of the Covid-19 Pandemic, that have been received. Others that have either been approved and are awaiting formal processing, or the city is waiting for approval of, are a street lighting grant, another fire department grant, and a river dock grant.

In other city business, the Industrial Holding Corporation (IHC) met prior to the City Council meeting. The only item of business was to approve the installation of two manhole covers on Sawmill Road for use by the City of Bowling Green Sewer Extension program.
