Michael L. Elmore: Green River Chapter DAR Veteran of the Year

Michael L. Elmore has been named Veteran of the Year by the Green River Chapter DAR.

Melanie Hunt, Green River Chapter Regent, welcomed everyone to the reception after the Veterans Parade last Saturday. Deb Duncan led the invocation, and Coleman Colter led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Sarah Duncan, Chapter Secretary, gave the presentation.

Family and friends surrounded Elmore as Sarah Duncan talked about his military career. When he graduated from Butler County High School in 1997, he felt there were two options: college or military. He joined the Army in 1998 and eventually was called up for active duty. Sergeant Elmore was a drill sergeant and taught first aid, foreign relations, and weapons training.

He was stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, North Africa, and other locations. Sergeant Elmore served in Operation Enduring Freedom, where he helped train the Iraqi National Guard and "Operation Stop Terrorism."

Sergeant Elmore appreciated that the U.S. Army allowed him to meet new people, see new sites, different experience cultures, and ways of life.

Sergeant Elmore retired from the service in 2012 and kept in touch with some of the men and women he met during his career.

Recognized as a Kentucky Colonel, Elmore is a licensed barber and philanthropist.  He was the Director of the Butler County Junior Pro football program, helped with Butler County Middle School football and the high school track team.

The military legacy continues in the family as his son Mikey is a 15 Romeo Apache Helicopter Mechanic.  Michael's advice to his son was to volunteer for what is needed and enjoy the experience.

The Green River Chapter and all of Butler County are proud of this year's recipient of the 2019 Veteran of the Year Award, Michael L. Elmore.
