Memorial Day Program Honors Those That Served

Laying of the Wreath Lynda Knight, Elaine Daughtery and Jane Smith

While some Butler Countians enjoyed a day off work on May 30 and used the time to relax or spend time with family and friends, others gathered on the courthouse lawn at 11:00 to honor fallen service men and women during the annual Memorial Day service.  The Green River Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution planned and hosted this year’s event.

After a welcome by chapter Regent Elaine Daugherty, members of the NJROTC from Butler County High School presented colors while Natalie Suoy, President of Green River Society Children of the American Revolution led those gathered in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Betty Brown, Green River chaplain, offered an invocation of thanks and blessing.  Senator C.B. Embry spoke about America’s involvement in wars through the years and about the meaning of Memorial Day.

Linda Wood read a letter written by Kathy Green Johnson, telling her memories of the Vietnam War.  The five servicemen from Butler County, who were killed in action in Vietnam, were honored with a bell ringing service. After Deb Duncan had read each soldier’s name, Melanie Hunt rang the courthouse bell. Lynda Knight, Jane Smith, and Elaine Daugherty placed a wreath in front of a monument to the fallen.  Doug Odle played taps and the service ended in a respectful silence in honor of those who gave all for their country.
