MEETING REPORT: Butler County Board of Education

New Board Member Aimee Sander (First District) and Supt. Scott Howard

The Butler County Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, February 14, at 6:30 PM at the Butler County Education Complex. All members of the Butler County Board of Education were present. Members currently include: Ryan Daugherty, Debbie Hammers, Amy Hood, Delbert Johnson, and Aimee Sanders. Newly appointed Board member Aimee Sanders was recognized and welcomed to the Board.

 In the absence of Finance Officer Eric Elms, Superintendent Scott Howard presented the treasurer’s report. The beginning balance of the month was $2,083,035.62, and the balance at the end of the month was $2,256,410.50. The receipts totaled $1,592,655.31, including the annual TVA in lieu payment of $194,358.51. Expenditures totaled $1,419,280.43. Superintendent Howard explained that the TVA payment came in a different month last year, so comparing this report to the same month last year would not be very beneficial. Howard also stated that leaders were beginning to look at next year’s staffing needs. The board approved the treasurer’s report and payment of monthly bills.

Superintendent Howard reported information regarding the following:     

 - Butler County Technical School Meeting – HVAC program will be recruiting students.

 - Chinese Delegation Meeting – The delegation members were impressed with The-Leader-In-Me students they met at MES.

 - Boy’s and Girl’s Club Board Meeting – Membership at NBES is increasing.

 - Superintendent’s Advisory Meeting, Frankfort – Watching the charter school legislation as well as legislation regarding the school calendar.

 - Chamber Luncheon – Chamber is moving forward with new safeguards in place.

 - WKU Meeting regarding eclipse in August 2017 – Developing a plan to allow grades 4-12 to experience the eclipse’s path of totality.

 - Archery Booster Meeting –The transportation issues have been settled.

 - Leader in Me Meeting – Met at Farm Boy. Several businesses will be invited to partner with the school system in developing the program.

 - WKU Chinese New Year Celebration – The Chinese teachers are doing a great job. Superintendent Howard would like to continue this program.

 - Butler County Extension Council Meeting – When the old Pamida building is renovated, the school district hopes to be allowed to use a part of the open back space for middle and high school archery.

 - Butler County Leadership Meeting – Met at the Kuntry Kitchen for an hour recently – a good morale-building time.

 - Dr. Bill Scott and Mary Alice Black Meeting, WKU Orchestra – Considering how to fund an orchestra string program for interested students.

 

Superintendent Howard also communicated the following items:

 - Kentucky Association of School Counselors Conference – Mr. Chad Flener selected as Principal of the Year,  February 23rd, 2017 – Lexington, KY     

 - Kentucky School Boards Association Annual Conference, February 24th-26th, 2017, in Louisville, KY         

 - February 20th, 2017, President’s Day – School will be in session.

 - District Basketball Tournament - Week of February 20th at BCHS

 - SBDM Minutes

 - School Budgets


 

Facilities/Maintenance/Transportation Report – Participation in breakfast numbers has increased since the student drop-off point has been near the cafeteria. This change may help the district keep the free-meal program for elementary and middle school students.

                                                                       

The Board approved fifteen items under the consent agenda:

 - BCHS FCCLA Trip Request to attend the 2017 Kentucky FCCLA State Meeting on March 19th – 22nd, 2017, in Louisville, KY

 - BCHS FCCLA Trip Request to attend the 2017 FCCLA Leadership Camp Conference on June 5th – 8th, 2017 in Hardinsburg, KY

 - BCHS Band Winter Guard Trip Requests to Attend Competitions at Independence High School in Thompson’s Station, TN, on February 18th, 2017; Spring Hill Middle School in Spring Hill, TN, on February 25th, 2017; Warren East High School in Bowling Green, KY,  on March 11th, 2017; and Spring Hill High School in Spring Hill, TN, on March 18th, 2017

 - MES Archery Trip Request to Attend the 2017 Kentucky NASP State Tournament in Louisville, KY, on March 31st – April 1st, 2017

 - Approve MES Archery Trip Request to attend the 2017 NASP Nationals in Louisville, KY, on May 11th – May 13th, 2017

 - MES Archery Trip Request to Attend the 2017 NASP World Tournament in Orlando, FL, on July 20th – 22nd, 2017

-FY 17 School Facilities Construction Commission KETS Second Offer of Assistance in the amount of $13,559 (attachment)

-Butler County Schools 2015 Renovations Change Order #1 to Direct P.O. #406 to Owensboro Winnelson in the amount of -$2.31 to zero-out Purchase Order and related KDE Supplemental Change Order Forms

-Butler County Schools 2015 Renovations Change Order #1 to Direct P.O. #411 to ASI Signage in the amount of -$2,284.00 to zero-out Purchase Order and related KDE Supplemental Change Order Forms

-Acknowledgement of Butler County Schools 2015 Renovations Non-Responsive Change Order Request to P.O. #407 to West Kentucky Door in the amount of -$3,091.43 and that such should be entered into the Board’s Accounting Journal

-Acknowledgement of Butler County Schools 2015 Renovations Non-Responsive Change Order Request to P.O. #417 to Southland Flooring in the amount of -$37.00 and that such should be entered into the Board’s Accounting Journal

-Acknowledgement of Butler County Schools 2015 Renovations Non-Responsive Change Order Request to P.O. #418 to Dur-A-Flex in the amount of -$176.91 and that such should be entered into the Board’s Accounting Journal

-Submission to the Kentucky Department of Education all documents related to Butler County Schools 2015 Renovations Change Order #1 to Direct P.O. #405 to Bluegrass Materials; Change Order #1 to Direct P.O. #406 to Owensboro Winnelson; and Change Order #1 to Direct P.O. #411 to ASI Signage
