MEETING: Morgantown City Council

The Morgantown City Council convened on July 13, 2023, for a regular meeting. The meeting was attended by all council members, except for Dustin Embry.

During the meeting, the council members discussed both old and new business items, with significant updates in several areas.

Old Business:

The Tourism Board requested permission to allocate up to $4,500 for half the cost of a sled for the tractor pull event following a request from the Chamber of Commerce. The funds for this request were taken from the tourism fund. The motion for approval was made by Russell Givens and seconded by Dionne Merritt. The council then moved the request to the new business agenda for further deliberation.

In transportation updates, MOGO transit reported a total of 1,215 riders during the previous period, while the Fire Department responded to eight emergency calls. Additionally, one EMT achieved national certification, highlighting the department's commitment to maintaining high standards of emergency medical care.

The Police Department handled a total of 297 calls during the month of June, resulting in 15 arrests and three ongoing criminal investigations. Officers also conducted 54 traffic stops. However, it was noted that two officers will be leaving the force. Additionally, new police vehicles have recently arrived, aiming to enhance the department's ability to provide effective public safety services. Officers were also encouraged to issue more courtesy notices by Mayor Phelps.

A community event at the city pool attracted 417 children for a night swim, contributing to a fun and engaging summer for Morgantown youth as Mayor Phelps eluded too briefly.

Unfinished Business:

The council addressed the second reading of the 2023 fiscal budget, and the vote successfully passed, leading to the budget's adoption.

New Business:

The city was awarded a cleaner water grant amounting to $197,000, which will contribute to the improvement of water quality and related services for Morgantown's residents.

Additionally, the council approved the Tourism Board's request to allocate $4,500 from the restaurant tax fund for the tractor pull event, further promoting local tourism and community engagement.

In response to the growing need for support and regulation, the council passed zoning regulations for sober living organizations in the city, aiming to address relevant concerns effectively.

Lastly, a discussion was held regarding a proposed 10 percent raise for city board members, with an additional $25 for the chair position. The matter is currently under consideration, and further details will be decided in upcoming meetings.

The July 13, 2023, Morgantown City Council meeting, having completed its agenda, was then adjourned.
