Meet the BCMS Boys' Basketball Team
Butler County Middle School boys’ basketball is set to begin action this week with a road trip to McLean County on Thursday. Lots of preparation and practice have gone in to this season’s team. Open Gym and conditioning began early in the summer and has intensified as the season draws near. This year’s team has many new faces from the top down. Leading the team this year is new head coach, Cody Donaldson. Assisting him will be Adam Shartzer, Brian Bivens, and Ronnie Tyree. The eighth grade team has some familiar faces in returning players Skyler Moore, Brennan Grubb, Caleb Beasley, Patton Allen and Neil Bewley. Rounding out the eighth grade team are new players Will Moore, Brendan Shanklin, Houston Hampton, Ernest Lee, Easton Phelps and Austin Burden. The seventh grade team has several returning players from last year as well as many new ones. Coach Donaldson says of this year’s team, “We have and will be working closely with Coach Dockery and the high school program this year. Our goal is to prepare these young men for competition at the next level. I’m proud of what we have accomplished so far, and I’m looking forward to a great season.”
To help prepare for this week’s season opener, the Bears traveled to Allen County Scottsville Saturday to scrimmage James E. Bazzell Middle School. The seventh grade team played a very talented Allen County team. The Bears started out a little timid and nervous with twelve first quarter turnovers but settled in and only allowed twelve more the remainder of the game. The Bears were able to put 28 total points on the scoreboard after a slow 4 point start in the first quarter. Coaches Shartzer and Tyree gave all 15 players time on the floor. Several Bears were able to convert and put points on the board. Justin Elms led the team in scoring with 8 points. Colton Bratcher contributed 6. Trevor Dockery had 4 while Wyatt Dean, Zack Smith, Keaton Diaz, Sage Graham and Jaden Hurt all had 2 each.
The eighth grade team took the floor next with total domination from start to finish. Team dynamics allowed for a run and gun offense that put a total of 70 points on the scoreboard. The Bears defense also fared well allowing their opponents to score only 27 points. A good understanding of help defense allowed players to anticipate passes and in return led to several steals. All eleven 8th grade players saw lots of action with everyone making contributions both offensively and defensively. Most players put points on the board. Leading Bear scorer was Brennan Grubb with 22 points. Also, contributing double digits was Will Moore with 16. Caleb Beasley threw in 9 points. Brendan Shanklin scored 8, Ernest Lee 6, Patton Allen 6, Houston Hampton 2 and Easton Phelps 1.
The Bears first five games will be on the road before their season home opener on November 19th. Come out this season and support the Bears. They will be an entertaining team to watch and promise to be competitive.
