MCC to host well-known author, speaker and pastor Brian McLaren

Morgantown Community Church (MCC) is excited to host author, speaker, and activist Brian McLaren on May 24, 2015, for an afternoon of learning and conversation. Brian served as a pastor for more than 20 years. Since that time he has devoted his energy to writing, speaking, and helping people of faith engage the key issues of our contemporary world.  Brian’s approach is one of generosity, allowing everyone, including those who might disagree with his positions, the space to discuss, learn, and grow.
This “Afternoon with Brian McLaren” will take place from 3-7 p.m. on May 24th, and offers attendees the opportunity to hear Brian present three lectures, drawn from some of his latest books.  First, Brian will speak about the Bible—specifically dealing with what the Bible is and how we approach it—from his latest book We Make the Road by Walking. The following presentation will focus on interfaith issues. In his book Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammed Cross the Road?: Christian Identity in a Multi-Faith World, McLaren deals with Conflicted Religious Identity Syndrome,  or CRIS. In a world that is getting smaller and smaller, McLaren’s work on interfaith relationships is all the more urgent. This talk will address how a strong, deep commitment to the Christian tradition can be held, while at the same time, remaining open toward people of other faith traditions. The final presentation, drawn from McLaren’s book A New Kind of Christianity, will speak to the future of the Christian tradition. In this talk Brian will offer thoughts about where the Christian tradition is headed as we move into the future.  The evening will also include a meal, local musicians performing during breaks, and an opportunity for attendees to spend some time in question and response with Brian. Attendees will also have the opportunity to have their books signed by the author. Registration cost for the afternoon sessions is $40.
According to MCC senior pastor Josh Scott, “This is a unique opportunity for MCC and South Central Kentucky. The chance to hear someone as accomplished and brilliant as Brian right here in our back yard is so exciting, and we are honored to be part of it. We often talk about the Christian path being about a journey of transformation, and Brian has been a helpful voice on that journey for many of us.” McLaren will also be speaking at both Sunday services, at 9 and 10:30 a.m, on the morning of May 24th. These Sunday services are always open to the public, and everyone who wishes to attend is welcome.  MCC is located a mile off exit 28 on the Natcher Parkway at 2882 Bowling Green Road.
