Mayor Phelps asks citizens to sound off on his performance

Mayor Billy Phelps

Morgantown Mayor Billy Phelps said he truly wants to know how the public thinks he is doing since taking office.  Now, the mayor is giving citizens the opportunity to tell him what they really think.

"Last year during my campaign I made promises that if I got elected on November 4th (a year ago today), I would do my very best to make a difference in our community.  Below I will list each of the promises I made, along with a summary of what I have done so far.

• I promised that I would get our money back from Kentucky Copper.
   – The city has gotten back over $700,000.

• I promised that I would do something about the price of the Eva J. Hawes Building.
   – The deposit has been cut in half.

• I promised that I would work on getting grants for the city of Morgantown.
   – I have worked to ensure that Morgantown received $86,000 from the Kentucky Department of Transportation to fix Boat Factory Road
   – I helped ARC to get an economic development grant for $325,000 and,
   – I am currently leading an initiative to secure a grant totaling 250,000, which will be alllocated toward fixing city hall

• I promised that I would do what I could to save the city money.
              –  Our General Fund now greatly exceeds what it was this time last year

• I promised that I would be  transparent.
   – Absolutely everything of interest that we do here in city hall is promptly recorded online through the city's website and Facebook page, as well as my own Facebook page, not to mention through radio and our city's media sources.
    – We have not required one single person to do an open records request to get information from the city.

• I promised that I would work for the city.
– If you go back through mine and the city's Facebook pages, you will see exactly how hard we have worked over this past year

Unfortunately – or rather fortunately – the city council and I have accomplished far more than is possible to fully catalog here.  However, I would genuinely like to know what you think."
