Logan Co. 42-24 win over Bears

The Butler County Bears fell in the season opener to the Logan Co. Cougars by the score of 42-24. The Bears have an entirely new look this year, with twelve first year starters in the lineup on offense or defense.

The inexperience at the line of scrimmage was the difference in the game. The Bears will make the necessary adjustments in the weeks to come and look to improve. 


         Logan County got on the scoreboard taking a 12-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. By halftime, the Cougars had improved the lead 20-0. The Bears had seven possessions in the first half but could not find the end zone.
        The Bears would get on the board in the third quarter when quarterback Brenden Shanklin connected with Gage Ward for a forty-eight-yard touchdown pass. The extra point kick was blocked, Bears trailed 27-6  with 8:48 in the third quarter of play.


        The Cougars increased the lead to 34-6; the Bears would score again on a Shanklin to Daltyn Havens touchdown pass from thirty-four yards out to make the score 34-12. The two point conversion attempt was no good. With 0:25 seconds left in the third quarter of play. The Bears cut into the lead again, as quarterback Warren Cameron scored on a two-yard run to cut the lead to 34-18, 9:37 in the fourth quarter of play. The two point conversion pass was incomplete.

The Bears with 5:25 left in the game, scored on a Shanklin ten yard run to make the score 42-24. The two point conversion run was no good. Defensively for the Bears sophomore Warren Cameron lead all, with nine tackles, two assists, one quarterback sack and caused a fumble. Daltyn Havens had an interception. The defensive line was led by Junior  Alex Rich, with five tackles and recovered a fumble.


The Bears were also hit with injuries during the game. Senior running back Houston Hampton suffered a pulled hamstring injury late in the third quarter. Senior linebacker Ty Smith also went down early in the first quarter with a hamstring pull, and Junior defensive lineman Aaron Bratcher suffered a knee injury in the fourth quarter. There is no timeline for their return.


The Bears drop to (0-1) on the season and prepare for week two as they travel to take on the Edmonson Co. Wildcats, Friday, August 25th. Kickoff is at 7 pm at Edmonson Co. High School.
