Local man dead following shooting; father arrested
An incident involving a father and son on Thursday in Morgantown has resulted in the death of a local man and the arrest of another.
Jason Martin (DOB 1/19/75) was pronounced dead by the Butler County Coroner's office on Thursday morning. Martin's father, Carl Martin, age 81, has been arrested and charged with murder.
The incident apparently began early in the day on Thursday. Carl Martin told law enforcement officers that he had taken Jason to breakfast that morning. Carl Martin told police that Jason had requested alcohol and that he (Carl) had gone to get it. Upon his return, according to law enforcement, Carl Martin said Jason Martin was walking around the yard saying that he had been shot. Carl Martin said he put his son in the vehicle and went to Butler County Family Care in Morgantown for treatment. Martin said the medical office was closed so he went down the street to Smith Funeral Home and asked them to call an ambulance. Jason Martin was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. His body was sent to Louisville for an autopsy. Preliminary results from the autopsy indicate that the gunshot was not self-inflicted.
Upon further questioning, Carl Martin's recounting of events and the timeline became an issue.
Also, according to law enforcement, new evidence was discovered Thursday night, which led to Carl Martin's arrest.
Giles Taylor, MPD Police Chief, stated, “This is a tragedy for all the family.”
Morgantown Police Department is conducting the ongoing investigation and is not releasing any additional details at this time.
