Local barbers step up to help students

“Barbers have always been the cornerstone of communities and I feel like that is being lost,” said Rich Ellis, a local barber who wants to give back to the community.

Rich and business partner Reed House of Mighty Sharp recently teamed up with Barbie Embry and Michael Elmore at Barb’s Barbershop in Morgantown to provide free haircuts to students who participate in the backpack program.

“The community provides so much for us, I see it as a small way to give back,” said Ellis.  “Reed thought it was a great idea and was on board.  Then I approached Barbie and we made it a team effort.

According to Ellis, about 34 kids were eligible and 26 were able to make it.  Haircuts were done June 29th-30th.

“Barbie and Micheal had to go a different route because of scheduling so they gave gift certificates to students,” said Ellis.

"Rich Ellis approached the Family Resource and Youth Services Center with his idea and we couldn't have been happier to help him reach our backpack program families," said Melissa Glass.  "Karla Coles and I contacted the families and set up the appointments for the designated days."

Glass continued, "When you are approached by professionals in the community who want to offer their skills and services, for free, to help kids get a great start to the school year, it is heart-warming. Rich Ellis reached out with a great idea and had a team in place who could make it happen. The giving people in this community are one of the many things that set Butler County apart," added Glass.

 There was 68 students total.

“It was a great experience and we really enjoyed it,” said Ellis.  “It was good to have cooperation and teamwork from fellow barbers and the Backpack Program.”
