Library receives construction grant to assist in building new facility

The Butler County Public Library has been awarded a Public Library Facilities Construction Fund grant from the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) to build a new library on the corner of East Morrison Street and North Main Street in Morgantown. The library will receive $141,432 a year from KDLA for the next 20 years to assist with debt retirement.

“Our public library’s trustees and staff work hard to provide quality services and resources to our community,” said Butler County Public Library Director Kenna Martin. “We take our mission statement very seriously which is to enhance the quality of life for residents by serving their information, leisure, and lifelong learning needs. This new facility will allow us to do even more to serve our citizens and help to make our county a great place to live, learn and work.”

“This new library is a wise investment in the future of Butler County. Residents of all ages will learn, grow and enjoy services at the new library for many years to come. We are pleased that the Commonwealth can participate in a project that will benefit so many,” said Naomi Lucas, library board president.

The building will be larger than the current facility and will enable library staff to provide dedicated spaces for children, teens and adults. In addition to expanded print collection space, the new library will add programming space for adults and children, a family and local history room, a conference room and quiet study spaces.  The building will also have an Idea Lab.  The lab will serve as an extension of the library to allow community members to expand their hobbies and recreational activities.

The Public Library Facilities Construction Fund program was designed to improve local library facilities around the state. There are eight libraries awarded grants this year.  Thirty-eight libraries in Kentucky are currently utilizing funds from the program.

KDLA provides equitable access to quality library and information resources and services, as well as helps public agencies ensure that legislatively mandated documentation of government programs is created, efficiently maintained and made accessible.
