Letter to the Editor
In August, Governor Bevin intends to make tax changes. Along with many Kentuckians living on a fixed income from Social Security, food is where I squeeze blood from my turnip. Forthcoming changes in Social Security and Medicare Medicaid looks to be a disaster coming as my established immutable expenses will likely be more than my income. Extra Help, one of several programs, currently pays my Medicare premiums. There are several programs I choose not to use to help the programs be available to those needing them more. If food is taxed this could force an assessment of whether I remain independent or sell what I have and hopefully satisfy my mortgage then move in with relatives. I won’t be alone in this process. In a perfect world taxes would be paid proportionately and everyone’s needs would be met. “Social” programs wouldn’t be a dirty word. Neither would Republican, Democrat, Conservative, or Liberal. We are one gigantic family with various personality types with needs and qualities making us suffer or feel blessed. How we get along allows us to solve problems or make them worse. Often it’s simply choosing to find a good solution. Taxing food isn’t a good solution.
