According to recent statistics I have seen, half of all children experience bullying while in school and 10% are bullied regularly. Child bullying has existed in neighborhoods and schools for centuries and was once thought to be just something everybody had to learn to deal with as part of growing up. Today it is a serious problem that marks many children’s school experience. Bullying can be harmful to children and may drastically affect their ability to progress academically, emotionally, and socially as well as damage their self-image in ways that negatively impact them for life.

I am glad to see that Kids on the Block is scheduled to perform their “Bullies and School Safety” program in both the elementary schools in Butler County. I serve on the Kids on the Block Board and know firsthand the good work they do. I truly believe in their mission of teaching people to be more tolerant of others and making good choices in difficult situations. I also know that the funding has to be in place in order for them to provide programs. I am pleased that the Morgantown and Butler County community has come together and supported these programs for the benefit of our young people. Although, I work in Bowling Green, I live in Butler County and am proud to be a part of such a caring community.
