Layton Phelps Wins County Spelling Bee

The Butler County Spelling Bee, hosted by the Butler County Retired Teachers and Butler County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, for students up to grade 8 was held on Thursday, February 18, 2016.

The 2016 winner of the County Spelling Bee was Morgantown Elementary 5th grade student, Layton Phelps son of Rachel and Bryan Phelps of Morgantown. The second place winner was Butler County Middle School 6th grader, Ethan Clark, son of Tammy and Michael Clark of Morgantown. Third place winner was North Butler Elementary 5th grader, Johnny Staples grandson of Karen Staples of Morgantown. The winner was presented with a certificate and $25.00 cash award provided by the Butler County Chapter of the DA.R. The Butler County Retired Teacher’s Organization will recognize the winner at their   luncheon in March at which time the winner will receive an additional cash award.   The local winner will compete in the Ford Motor Company Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee to be held at the Kentucky Center for the Arts on Saturday, March 5, 2016
