Lady Bears fall to Daviess Co.

The Lady Bears traveled to Owensboro on Monday night for a date with the Panthers of Daviess County High School. The Lady Panthers came into the game with a 13-8 record, led by Sarah Martin, one of the best players in the 3rd region.

The Lady Bears stayed with the Lady Panthers early in the game. Katie Graham continued her good play for BCHS and had 4 points and an assist early in the contest, and the Lady Bears trailed only 9-6 with three minutes to go in the first period. That’s when Head Coach Pat Hume turned up the defensive pressure and watched as his senior-dominated team put the Lady Bears away. The Lady Panthers shut down the BCHS scoring for the rest of the first period and owned the lead at 11-6 after the first period. In the face of the Panther press the Lady Bears managed only 5 points in the second period and headed for the locker room down 26-11 at halftime. Katie Graham led the Lady Bears with 7 points in the first half. Sarah Martin led all scorers with eleven points in the first half.

Things did not improve for the Lady Bears in the second half. Coach Hume left in his starters and continued to press BCHS to open the second half. The result was a 47-25 lead after three periods for the Lady Panthers. Madeline Drake had a strong second half for the Lady Bears, scoring 14 after the break, including three 3-point goals to finish with  14 for the game. Koshosha Turner had one of her best games as a Lady Bear. Turner used good passing on the inside from Katie Graham to convert for 8 points for BCHS. Graham finished the game with 9 points but added three assists and a three-pointer on the evening. However it wasn’t enough to counter 23 points from Martin as the Lady Panthers bested the Lady Bears by a final score of 57-37.

The Lady Bears will be back in action on Thursday night when they host Ohio County in Morgantown. The Bears will travel to Ohio County for a varsity game on Tuesday night.
