Lady Bears, Bears split against Trinity

Lady Bears beat Whitesville Trinity, 59-28; Bears fall 74-72 in a barn-burner.

MORGANTOWN — Butler County moved ahead early and never faltered on its way to beating Whitesville Trinity 59-28 in a 12th District girls' basketball game on Friday, Dec. 9. 

The Lady Bears returned to the win column following a loss to non-district opponent Todd County Central four days earlier. 

Starting strong, Butler County doubled up Whitesville Trinity 12-6 in the first quarter. 

Stretching its lead after the initial quarter, Butler County led 26-13 at halftime.

Butler County put the game completely out of Whitesville Trinity's collective reach shortly after the intermission period, leading 50-17 at the end of the third quarter. 

Butler County featured four scorers in double figures. 

Taylor Leach led Butler County to the win, scoring a game-high 16 points. Accompanying Leach in double figures for the Lady Bears, Kennedy Rice scored 12 points while Jenna Phelps and Ann Marie Skaggs netted 11 points apiece. 

Chipping in offensively, Parker Willoughby (four points), Addison Miller (three points) and Bailey Moore (two points) accounted for the rest of Butler County's individual scoring. 

Josie Aull scored nine points to lead Whitesville Trinity. Following Aull in scoring for the Lady Raiders, Emily McDaniel netted eight points. 

Butler County is scheduled to visit Whitesville Trinity for another 12th District girls' basketball game on Friday, Jan. 27.

In boys' action,  Butler County came up short as visiting Whitesville Trinity held on to win 74-72 in a 12th District boys' basketball game on Friday, Dec. 9. 

Whitesville Trinity led at the conclusion of each quarter, outscoring Butler County 16-10 in the opening period. 

The Raiders led 37-27 at halftime but Butler County wouldn't go away.

Whitesville Trinity led 52-43 at the conclusion of the third quarter and narrowly escaped the Bears' home court with the district win. 

Landon Huff scored 24 points to lead Whitesville Trinity to the win. 


Ty Price poured in a game-high 35 points to lead the Bears. Accompanying Price in double figures for Butler County, Justin Castlen netted 10 points. 


Narrowly missing double figures for the Bears, Lawson Rice scored nine points while Trever Deweese tallied eight points.

 

The other scorers for the Bears in the district matchup were Luke Laughing (five points), Kolton Hudson (four points) and Carson Miller (one point).
