Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 3 Crews Mobilizing Anti-icing Operations for Winter Storm

Possible Winter Weather System to hit area Thursday

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (Jan. 4, 2022) –  Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 3 crews are ramping up anti-icing operations beginning today in advance of a possible winter weather system moving into the area on Thursday. Weather models are constantly changing so accumulation totals are not known. The weather models are shaping up showing hazardous driving conditions could be in play beginning Thursday.

District 3 crews are mobilizing today to put down brine on all routes throughout the District over the next three days. Motorists should be alert for slow moving KYTC vehicles on the move beginning today spraying brine on the roadways in advance of the winter weather system.  Brine is sprayed on pavement that dries to leave a fine powder coating of salt that sticks on the road driving surface that is activated by falling snow. Anti-icing initially improves driving conditions in the early hours of a snow and ice event, then makes it easier for crews to plow snow by keeping frozen precipitation from bonding to the pavement.

Motorists are reminded to adjust their driving behavior to meet localized weather conditions as the snow & ice develops. Motorists are advised to monitor the weather forecast via area news media outlets or go to US National Weather Service Louisville Kentucky | Facebook.

The KYTC District 3 snow & ice team will continue to monitor this weather system and will update the response plan as needed. Motorists should plan ahead and give plenty of time to prep vehicles for travel and slower travel speeds during a winter weather event.
