Jarrod Jacobs: The Priceless Word of God

Do we know the value of God’s word? Many consider it worthless. Yet, those who are spiritually minded (I Cor. 1:18) and love the Lord place great value upon God’s word. What makes the word of God priceless?

God’s word is priceless because God breathed out (inspired) His word through the Holy Spirit (II Tim. 3:16-17; II Pet. 1:20-21). When we read the Bible, the words we read aren’t men’s opinions, impressions, or summaries of God’s word, but the actual word God spoke to men (Jer. 1:9; Isa. 51:16; Ezek. 3:10; Matt. 10:19; Lk. 12:12)! Therefore, when we follow the Bible, we follow God’s word, not man’s.

God’s word is priceless because it teaches us how to live upon this earth (Matt. 7:12, 22:39; Col. 3:9; Rom. 13:1-2; Phil. 4:8; Titus 2:11-12; etc.). We are taught how to “love life and see good days” (I Pet. 3:10-11). Who doesn’t want to have this? Who doesn’t want to live “peaceably with all men” (Rom. 12:18)? God’s word shows us how to do it! God’s word also directs our steps for living a morally pure life (I Tim. 5:22; Matt. 5:22, 28, 33-48; etc.). Therefore, we need to listen and obey.

Another reason the word of God is priceless is that it’s eternal (Ps. 119:89). Have we noticed that many of the books written today are out of date before they ever hit the bookstores? In contrast, God’s eternal word is just as true (Jn. 17:17), as accurate, as alive (Heb. 4:12), and as needed today as ever, and it will continue to be such forever!

God’s word is priceless because it is truth (Jn. 17:17). There are no false statements in God’s word. In addition to this, we see that though not a scientific book, God’s word is scientifically correct, stating observable scientific facts (Gen. 1:1-2; Isa. 40:22; Ecc. 1:5-7; etc.). Though not a geography book, the Bible is geographically true. The cities, countries, and landmarks exist and are where the Bible says they are. Though not a history book, the Bible is historically accurate. The kings and empires are mentioned in the correct historical time periods! There are no anachronisms in the Bible!

God’s priceless word reveals what men must do to be saved from sin (Acts 2:38). This is the purpose of the Bible. Its theme is redemption from sin and how man can obtain this today (Heb. 5:8-9; Mk. 16:16)! God has sent His Son to die as a sacrifice for our sins (Jn. 3:16). Therefore, we can have eternal life when we hear and follow Christ’s teachings (Jn. 10:10b; Mk. 16:16). Our life and peace come from being spiritually-minded (Rom. 8:6), and it’s the priceless word of God that tells us how to obtain this mindset (Col. 3:1-4)!

Finally, the word of God is priceless because of what it took to get His word to us. For a glimpse of what was necessary, read Hebrews 11:32-39. Study the apostle Paul’s life and see what he endured to spread God’s word (II Cor. 11:23-28). Consider what our Lord Jesus Christ had to suffer in order to spread God’s word upon this earth (Jn. 1:11). Yes, many understood that God’s word is priceless. Consider the price they paid in order to teach it to others! God’s word is a priceless treasure given to us. It’s more valuable than all of the world’s treasures!
