Jarrod Jacobs: God's Wisdom

One thing that I find lacking in this world is the wisdom of God. Can we ever know God’s wisdom? I suggest that we can know God’s wisdom when we read the Bible. For this article, I chose Psalm 119 as the basis for our study because it emphasizes God’s word in every verse. Please read the verses listed below carefully and be ready to make some applications.

 ·       “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11).

·       “I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word” (Psalm 119:16).

·       “Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart” (Psalm 119:34).

·       “Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed” (Psalm 119:80).

·       “O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.” (Psalm 119:97-100).

·       “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple” (Psalm 119:130).

Let me suggest that after reading those verses above, we learn that God’s wisdom needs to be remembered.

David realized that the wisdom that God gives us needs to be remembered at all times (Ps. 119:11, 16). In fact, the first psalm agrees with Psalm 119 and shows us that the righteous will gladly meditate in God’s law at all times (Ps. 1:2). The plea to remember God’s wisdom is not man’s idea, for Jesus showed us that by remembering God’s word, we can defeat Satan (Matt. 4:1-11; Lk. 4:1-13; I Pet. 2:21-22). How are you doing at remembering God’s word?

Also, God’s wisdom is not a shameful thing. David said he was not to be ashamed of the wisdom of God (Ps. 119:80). We should not be ashamed of it, either (Rom. 1:16; II Tim. 1:8). Sadly, there are many in this world who think it a shameful thing to have knowledge of the word of God. However, God makes it clear that we should not be ashamed of knowing His word and applying His word to our lives (Ps. 119:80; II Tim. 2:15). Are you ashamed of God’s wisdom? I hope not!

One thing folks forget is that God’s wisdom involves obedience! Please notice that it is not enough simply to “know” God’s wisdom. It is also necessary to apply what we learn in God’s word (Ps. 119:34). For example, Jesus taught that the wise man not only heard His word but obeyed it as well (Matt. 7:24-27). Obedience is what made him wise! What a tragedy to see people who know what to do to please God, and refuse to do it! Let us decide that we will meditate and study God’s wisdom, and then obey it. Would God consider you wise?

Finally, it is God’s wisdom that makes us wiser than the world. Regardless of the wisdom the world may proclaim, God’s wisdom makes us wiser than the world (Ps. 119:97-100; Isa. 55:8-9). God looks on the world’s wisdom as foolishness that passes away (I Cor. 1:18-21; II Jn. 2:17). Let us take heed to God’s wisdom as long as we live! Friend, would God consider you wise?
